There comes a game title that shakes the gaming community more than all the nuclear bombs dropped within the Fallout franchise; one of which that not only garners the attention of every console, but one that could potentially end the console wars for good if the big players listened to their player base.
That game is Helldivers 2.
The sequel to the top down viewing Helldivers 1, Helldivers 2 takes place roughly 100 years after the events of the first game in third person, where the main premise is spreading "managed democracy" across the galaxy against two main factions, with a possible third or even fourth on the way. Super Earth has players enacting themselves as the gun-ho freedom fighters that are Helldivers. The goal is to eliminate and defend Super Earth's borders from the automatons and the terminids on either side of the galaxy, earning rewards and access to new gear in the process.
Whether you choose to spill the oil of the automatons, or to squish the numerous swarms of bugs, Super Earth offers its Helldivers their own destroyer, a sizeable arsenal of weaponry, gear, armor and strategems, which can range from bombing runs to mechs, to take down anything and everything that dares to threaten the taste of freedom and the beauty of democracy.
Helldivers 2 has taken the gaming community BY STORM. Hundreds of thousands of players have rushed to jump in to the point that the initial servers needed to be upgraded due to the sheer volume of player activity. For PC and Playstation players alike, the many warzones are chock full of players ready to deliver some Liber-tea to the enemies of Super Earth.
What's really unexpected was the reaction of Xbox players that are left unable to play due to Sony owning the rights to Helldivers 2, hence being a Playstation exclusive (with PC being an exception). Many are left wondering as to when they can have a turn to help their fellow brothers from their respective consoles.
Not with heated insults or with childish banter, but many comments across the board that wish to provide the necessary reinforcements for their fellow Playstation and PC counterparts.
Statements along the lines of:
"We've fought the Covenant, the Flood, the Reapers and the Locust Horde, and we will help you with this fight."
"Fellow Spartans are on standby, waiting for your call. Let us bring the fight to them."
"We need to help spread democracy for Super Earth."
Despite server capacity being major issues early post launch, many Xbox players have stated that Microsoft can aid with the workload.
Not only this, but during the Vietnam-esque battles on Malevelon Creek, where many Helldivers were having issues fighting off the automatons, many Playstation and PC players were begging for reinforcements while all the Xbox players could do was watch.
"We need the Xbox players. Bring them in!"
"We could really use our Xbox brethren in this fight!"
The fact that Playstation players and PC players alike were asking for support from a console they've been against for several years shows that Helldivers 2 could potentially be the one game that can very well end the console wars and have cross play the likes of which would be extraordinary.
There are thousands of comments, video compilations, tik toks and youtube shorts of Helldivers 2 players rallying behind getting their Xbox brothers and sisters into the fight.
Name one game that has brought the gaming community together like this.
And from a studio that has only 100 developers behind the game.
Not only is this a monumental feat, but if, or when, Xbox players are finally allowed into the fight, there will be money to be made for all parties, and more players can take the fight to the enemies of Super Earth.
As someone that has gamed on PC, Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo, seeing something such as this taking place today, especially for being more of a die hard Xbox player, it brings a tear to my eye that we are seeing more union within the gaming community.
Sony, I hope you don't miss out on this. Guaranteed that there's a deal that you can make with this. Microsoft is already offering ports of their exclusives. Why don't you return the favor for the sake of the gaming community.
For Super Earth.
For Democracy!
